Taegan acts cold and tough, but only because she is utterly terrified, terrified all the time. She is afraid of losing people, so she just pushes them away before they can leave. She clings to Newt, because she is terrified of losing her brother and the only person who understands her. She acts like a tough cookie, but she really is just a scared little girl too afraid to make friends.
Newt is painfully aware of this and is tries his best to push her into meeting people. Sometimes he can be harsh, but it is so hard to get through to her. He knows he will not be around forever, and he wants to make sure his sister is not alone when he is gone. He fears that he might not be able to get her to open up to others.
